Photoshop Phriday: Desmond Morgan and the Michigan Defense
Over the past eight years I have worked hard to suppress the memories of my first Michigan football game. Among a few other things, I still very clearly remember someone in front of me throwing up his hands and several times shouting “No defense!” in an exasperated tone. Hopefully he is still a Michigan fan, since he will be very pleased with how this season has gone. This year Michigan’s defense is near the top in almost every possible metric. They rank second only to Boston College in giving up 184 yards per game. The defense shut out Maryland last week and BYU the week before, yielding just 105 yards to each team.
Last week’s game against Maryland got off to a slow start when the offense was unable to capitalize off of a few interceptions. Senior linebacker Desmond Morgan was responsible for one of those turnovers in the second quarter. Morgan has been a starter since 2011 for the defense, now in his fifth year after an injury kept him sidelined last season. In 2012 and 2013 he earned Academic All-Big 10 honors in 2012 and 2013 and in 2012 was selected to wear the Gerald Ford legends jersey. Morgan and the defense will once again have high expectations this week against Northwestern.
