Photoshop Phriday: Sierra Romero
Last year I highlighted the stellar career of Michigan Softball Coach Carol Hutchins and this week she has the team back in the Women’s College World Series (WCWS) competing for a NCAA championship. The team has not lost since April 3rd (26 games in a row) and comes to the World Series after taking the Big 10 regular season and tournament titles. Last night they defeated Alabama 5-0 in the opening round of the WCWS. One of the biggest contributors to the team’s success is junior infielder Sierra Romero. Romero’s prolific offensive power makes for some almost comical numbers and records. This year she has a .472 batting average (down from .491 last season) and a .624 on base percentage (boosted by the fact that she is walked so often). At the end of this regular season she was already tied for Michigan’s career home run lead!
Her career batting average now sits at .445, nobody in program history before her has averaged above .389 over a career. By the end of next year it will probably be easier to list the records she doesn’t hold rather than the ones she does. Unsurprisingly her achievements have been properly recognized. Romero is a two time (2013 and ’14) Big 10 Player of the Year and a three time All American. What is Romero’s secret? She is certainly incredibly hard working and talented, but teammates think her pre-game Darth Vader peanut butter cup provides an extra boost (Photo credit James Coller).
