Photoshop Phriday: Steve Breaston
If you ever find yourself wondering who holds a certain kick return record at Michigan (a completely normal thing to wonder), there is a good chance Steve Breaston is the answer. Breaston’s contributions from 2003 to 2007 made him Michigan’s all time leading punt and kickoff returner. Not only did he set records, but in most cases he put himself so far out of reach from everyone else. His 208 career returns (kickoffs and punts) are a Michigan record, Anthony Carter is next with 144. Over his career Breaston ran back kicks for a total of 3,592 yards, obliterating Carter’s past record of 2,510 yards. His five career returns for touchdowns have also never been matched.
Breaston also spent time as a receiver, hauling in 58 receptions as a senior and 156 overall (good for 5th most in Michigan history). His 315 all purpose yards in the 2005 Rose Bowl set a record for the storied bowl game that wasn’t broken until 2012 (by Jared Abbrederis of Wisconsin). Included in that total for Breaston was 221 kick return yards which remains a Rose Bowl record. After a stellar Michigan career Breaston was selected by the Arizona Cardinals in the 5th round of the 2007 NFL draft.
